This title reflects my reaction when a friend from my country of origin in the Caribbean revealed last Fall that, despite availing herself of many opportunities, she had never seen snow.
But after this incredulous reaction, I promised to invite her up to Washington to experience the natural wonder of snow at the first opportunity. Therefore, imagine my disappointment when the three winter months of December, January and February went by without nary a snowflake to see….
Naturally, as soon as I gave up hope, Mother Nature favored us last night with a bona fide winter storm. Alas, my friend had other plans that made traveling up to see snow seem, well, childish. And so another opportunity was lost….
Nevertheless, I hope she derives some consolation from these two views from my window and two others of familiar locations in DC:
Meanwhile, here’s how President Obama of Chicago elaborated on why he ridiculed DC residents as “snow wimps” after the city closed down in the face of a light snowstorm (as it typically does) on January 28, 2008:
My children’s school was canceled today. Because of what? Some ice? As my children pointed out, in Chicago, school is never canceled. In fact, my 7-year-old pointed out that you’d go outside for recess in weather like this. You wouldn’t even stay indoors. We’re going to have to apply some flinty Chicago toughness to this town.
Nevertheless, with most of the 6 inches of snow that was forecast already on the ground, I suspect even the preternaturally cool Obamas will appreciate the day off….
