Clearly, given everything from the Peace Corps to AmeriCorps, there is nothing new about politicians calling on Americans to volunteer for public service.
The service year option, which would provide job training and mentorship, is designed to prepare young Marylanders for college and careers and to make access to those opportunities equitable and affordable; part of Moore’s broader platform to attack complex systemic problems, such as child poverty and the racial wealth gap, with a focus on providing the same opportunities to people from various backgrounds.

But I urge Wes Moore, the Democratic nominee for governor in Maryland, to distinguish his call by making it mandatory. This would put the most salutary take on “a peacetime draft” in history.
Meanwhile, the only people bitching about the $20 million cost are penny wise and pound foolish Republicans. You know, the ones who think it makes more sense to spend billions raising unwanted kids on welfare than to simply recognize women’s rights to have abortions.
More Kennedy than JFK and better than Obama
By the way, mark my words, Wes Moore will be the next black president of the United States. And, trust me, his JFK aura extends well beyond this clarion call to public service.
Simply put, when he runs in 2028 or 2032, Americans will find that Moore is even more impressive than Barack Obama was in 2008! Sorry Kamala…
