US and Israel against the world
Today, for the fourth time since last year, the United States vetoed a UN resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. By doing so, it reinforced its willingness to sacrifice its reputation and goodwill to provide unconditional support for Israel — even if that means becoming complicit in genocide. And I am personally dismayed that the face of this complicity at the UN was that of Black Ambassador Robert A. Wood.
It’s also noteworthy that the US was the only member of the Security Council to vote against this ceasefire resolution. As such, it ceded the high ground to countries like China and Russia, allowing them to declare common cause with its own allies like Britain and France.
Ironically, President Biden has spent much of this war publicly pleading with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to declare victory and end Israel’s genocidal onslaught. But Netanyahu has played Biden with Iago-like cunning. He’s waging a forever war to avoid facing criminal prosecution and prison.
In this regard, Netanyahu views Donald Trump’s reelection as a godsend. Because, like Biden, Trump will provide unconditional support. But, unlike Biden, Trump will express no support for a “two-state solution” and no political misgiving about Israel claiming Zionist dominion over Gaza and the West Bank.
Moreover, Netanyahu has convinced Israelis that Trump is the second coming of Cyrus the Great and that his personal relationship with Trump makes him the only Israeli leader the former president would even consider dealing with. For Netanyahu, Trump’s return to power is not just a political advantage but a divine endorsement of his rule and his military gambit to avoid criminal justice.
Netanyahu offers Hamas $5m per hostage and their freedom
Apropos of his shameless cunning, Netanyahu promised Israelis he’d eliminate Hamas. Yet here’s what The New York Times reported yesterday:
‘To those who want to leave this entanglement I say: Whoever brings us a hostage will find a safe way out for himself and his family. We will also give $5 million for every hostage,’ Netanyahu said.
So, after destroying Gaza and killing nearly 44,000 Palestinians — mostly innocent women and children — Netanyahu is now rewarding Hamas hostage-takers with this deal of a lifetime. He’s so blinded by schemes to save his own hide that he can’t see that this bribe is an unwitting admission of epic, genocidal failure.
Kristallnacht everywhere
Thanks to Netanyahu’s genocidal onslaught in Gaza, Jews are facing backlash that makes them feel as unsafe in America and Europe today as they must have felt in Germany during the 1930s. The sad irony is that pro-Palestinian students shouting antisemitic slurs at Jewish students who support a ceasefire are almost as misguided as Hamas terrorists who slaughtered Israelis supporting a two-state solution.
But, if Israelis care about Jews in the diaspora or hostages in Gaza, they’ll heed Senator Schumer’s plea: Get rid of Netanyahu (by any means necessary), accept a ceasefire, and commit to a two-state solution.
