If anyone thought President Bush was going to extend his European charm offensive to the United Nations, his appointment this week of John Bolton as Ambassador to that organization should put that notion to rest. Here’s what Mr. Bolton thinks of the UN:
There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world and that is the United States when its suits our interest and we can get others to go along.
John Bolton: The UN’s new Nanny?
Arrogant, confrontational, demanding and self-righteous, Bolton, nevertheless, might be precisely the kind of diplomat the UN needs to recover from the embarrassing scandals and failures that have perverted its mission over the last decade. (Click here to read Kofi Annan’s UN Malaise for the sordid details).
Indeed, in addition to being the principal provider of funds for UN operations, the US may now have to assume the role of nanny to the congenitally unruly diplomats who have transformed impressions of the UN’s mission from aiding and peacekeeping to raping and pillaging. And, the stench of corruption now emanating from that organization stems from the rotten thieves at its headquarters right down to predatory UN foot soldiers deployed all over the world.
God save the poor from the UN! Where have you gone…Ralph Bunche
