As of this posting, there’s still one seat outstanding. But here are the final results for all intents and purposes:
- Conservatives: 364 up from 318
- Labour: 203 down from 262
- SNP: 48 up from 35
- Lib Dems: 11 down from 12
Of course, this election was a de facto referendum on the Conservatives’ promise to “Get Brexit Done!” They have a mandate and Johnson insists that they will get it done by the end of January.
But I’d be remiss not to mention the humiliation these results delivered to Nigel Farage. He, after all, is/was the face of Brexit. Yet, voters found his leadership so odious, they did not vote for a single member of his Brexit Party to enter Parliament.
More to the point, Farage himself was too chicken to even run for a seat. Now’s this blowhard charlatan is running from one TV studio to another to claim credit for Johnson’s victory. Specifically, he’s claiming that, but for his Brexit candidates targeting Labour and Lib Dem candidates, the Conservatives would not have won their landslide “Brexit” mandate.
Except that this makes about as much sense as Steve Bannon claiming credit for Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 US presidential election. Everyone knows that credit belongs to Vladimir Putin.
