BREAKING NEWS: Feeding frenzy in New York as journalists line-up for their copy of the most anticipated Report ever published by the United Nations.
Meanwhile…
Buried in schadenfreude and lamentations here in Washington, DC over President Bush’s withdrawal of his Harriet Miers nomination and looming indictments against one or more White House aides was news of Paul Volcker’s release of his final Report on the Manipulation of the [UN] Oil-for-Food Programme.
Highlights of the report include charges that 2,253 firms from 66 countries took kickbacks (including Volvo and Daimler Chrysler AG), and that a number of individuals took bribes from Saddam Hussein to argue for lifting UN sanctions and against regime change in Iraq (most notably amongst them the maverick British MP George Galloway whose vain protestations to the contrary – under oath – I wrote about in this previous article).
Click here for my article on what Volcker’s report portends for the United Nations and its beleaguered Secretary General Kofi Annan.
