Ukraine, a new post-war Germany
Ukraine is at the epicenter of a global power struggle reminiscent of historical flashpoints.
Russia seems hellbent on mirroring Germany’s aggressive expansionist tactics of 1939. Its ongoing attempt to annex Ukraine is eerily reminiscent of Germany’s annexation of Poland.
Russian forces in two armored columns captured a key southeastern coastal town near the Russian border Thursday after Ukrainian forces retreated in the face of superior firepower, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.
Plainly, Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken the measure of President Obama and found him to be no obstacle to re-creation of the Russian empire.

Cold War II
Indeed, Ukraine might be divided between the West and East like Germany was after WWII. Yet this looming irony seems lost on everyone. Alas, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
But I presaged the events unfolding in Ukraine months ago in the blog post “A Ukraine Divided Is the Only Way It Will Stand” on May 6, 2014. So here’s to Cold War II. Or, as I warned from the outset of this conflict, here’s to history repeating itself.
Of course, that means Western leaders will eventually get their act together to stop Putin. You know, just like their predecessors did to stop Hitler.
Moreover, they will win this second Cold War against Putin’s Novorossiya. You know, just as they won the first one against Stalin’s Soviet Union.
