Aides reportedly blocked Trump’s unethical and illegal orders in his first term. According to The New York Times, this frustrated him so much that he exclaimed, “Where’s my Roy Cohn?”
That’s because he wanted a top aide who would bend or break laws to enforce his venal, vindictive, racist agenda. Now he has Emil Bove and Stephen Miller both vying to be his Roy Cohn. Trump couldn’t be happier.
Emil Bove: From prosecutor to purger
Emil Bove was a DOJ lawyer who prosecuted Jan 6 insurrectionists. But he set heads spinning when he jumped ship to defend Trump against two major DOJ criminal indictments.
Armed with insider knowledge, Bove deployed delaying tactics to keep the DOJ from even trying – let alone convicting – Trump. Then he stunned Washington again by accepting Trump’s nomination to boss his former DOJ colleagues. After all, Trump made clear that he wanted a nominee to persecute the DOJ lawyers who prosecuted him.
So, never before in the history of American jurisprudence has a DOJ lawyer gone from prosecuting criminals to defending their ringleader – only to return to persecute those who prosecuted them.
Stephen Miller: Architect of Trump’s ‘final solution’ on immigration
In Trump’s first term, Stephen Miller masterminded the infamous Muslim travel ban. For this term, he masterminded a controversial mass deportation plan.
Simply put, Miller relishes being the face of White supremacist efforts to limit immigration to White Europeans. He seems unbothered that he’s enabling neo-Nazis in their pipe dream of making America White again.
Jews doing neo-Nazi work
Both Bove and Miller are Jewish, a fact that informs as much as it betrays. Both also bear an uncanny resemblance to Roy Cohn. Never mind that they’re willing to play Heinrich Himmler for Trump. Worse, they come across as self-hating Jews who believe the more they act like Nazis, the more Trump and his White evangelical MAGA base will embrace them.
Of course, they’re doing dirty work for a president with a long, well-documented history of spewing antisemitic tropes. Case in point, Trump spent much of last year on the campaign trail accusing American Jews of disloyalty for supporting Democrats. But he had already made clear his racist contempt for both Jews and Blacks with this classic insult:
Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.
Yet somehow, Trump’s brazen antisemitism doesn’t seem to faze Bove or Miller.
Jews fomenting antisemitic hate and violence
Arguably, Trump sees no difference between ordering Bove and Miller to do his bidding in America and ordering Netanyahu to do it in Gaza. That’s the only way to explain his imperious command for Netanyahu to “clean out” Gaza—code for ethnic cleansing— for the US to own and develop in due course.
Israel’s genocidal onslaught in Gaza has already triggered a surge in antisemitic hate and violence at levels not seen since the early 1930s in Nazi Germany. Nothing illustrates how vulnerable Jews feel more than reports of them now hiding their Jewish identity as a safety measure across Europe and America.
So imagine the exacerbating effect of two Jews fronting the most racist, undemocratic, and genocidal policies in America since the early 1960s. Yet Bove, Miller, and Netanyahu seem to have no compunction — not just about reinforcing vile Jewish stereotypes, but about endangering Jews more than any neo-Nazi ever could.
But please beware: the vast majority of Jews in Israel, America, and the diaspora oppose Netanyahu’s genocide in Gaza as surely as they oppose Bove and Miller’s neo-fascism in America. I stand in solidarity with them – and against the menacing scourge of antisemitism.
