Everyone expected Republicans to wrest control of both chambers of Congress. But that’s only because no one expected former President Donald Trump to be such a drag for Republican candidates.
Trump turns Republican red wave blue
But early results indicate that this disgraced, twice-impeached, coup-plotting former president motivated millions to vote against Republicans.
Control of both chambers of Congress hung in the balance Wednesday morning after Democrats showed surprising strength in key battleground races on Tuesday. Too many races remained uncalled to project which party will control the House or Senate.

Voters are rejecting MAGA candidates who championed Trump’s lies, conspiracies, and the January 6th insurrection during these 2022 midterm elections. This is enabling Democrats to win key battleground races, thereby holding that Republican red wave at bay.
Washington insiders know how these results will play out: Democrats will defy historical trends by retaining control of the Senate. Republicans will take over the House with a margin of no more than ten seats. That is, instead of the 25-40 everyone expected.
Ironically, the blushing realization of this outcome caused the only red wave we saw last night. It came as Republican faces turned red with rage and embarrassment.
