Hollywood thinks Tom Cruise has lost his mind. Most point to his giddy protestations of love for barely legal Katie Holmes.
But it’s his fanatical preaching on the virtues of Scientology. That is what makes him seem unhinged.
Tom Cruise preaches Scientology
Cruise is promoting his new movie, War of the Worlds. But he’s hijacking every press interview to get on his soap box about Scientology.
He should be exciting fans with talk of his movie derring dos. Instead, he’s preaching to them about the hazards of prescription drugs.
And it’s not helping that he’s using cult words like “narconon.” Because he’s coming across like a drug-addled maniac.
Cruise has become a zealous preacher of Scientology dogma. Of course, religion is the most powerful and controlling drug known to man. And he’d be proud to admit that alone explains his antic behavior.
Cruise damns Shields
Most religions are paternalistic, even misogynistic. So, Cruise might blame his religion for making him strike out against Brooke Shields.
After all, he damned her for selling her soul for (prescription) drugs. It didn’t matter to him that she was treating postpartum depression. Of course, stories abound about people getting hooked on prescription painkillers. But even they don’t need a movie star damning them for using those pills.
This “Top Gun” even ridiculed “Pretty Baby.” He insinuated that his career is flourishing because he’s following Scientology. And hers is not because she failed to follow his religious Primrose Path.
Indeed, critics suggest Cruise’s path to movie stardom was riddled with hypocrisy. You know, much like the late matinee-idol Rock Hudson’s. His path featured him seducing and using beautiful starlets to keep his homosexuality in the closet.
This criticism is below the belt. It is nobody’s business how Cruise conducts his private life. And despite its shotgun appearance, Katie Holmes married him of her own volition.
But it’s one thing for movie stars to offer theatrical prescriptions to end poverty and bring lasting peace. It’s quite another for them to dispense medical advice with Talibanic certainty.
No doubt Shields can defend the integrity of her medical and professional decisions. Even so, Cruise deserves criticism for acting like a fanatical quack. After all, many may mistake his charisma for religious or, God forbid, medical authority.
That said, Cruise has been a devout Scientologist for decades. So only God knows what is suddenly inspiring these fire-and-brimstone rants. Hell, the conviction he conveys would humble any evangelical preacher.
New mom Shields is playing the most important role of her life. I wish her well. Meanwhile, the cradle-robbing Cruise is on a mission impossible to find meaning in his. I wish him well too.

His celebrity has gotten to his head. Anyone know why he and Penelope broke up? If he’s gay, why do these women play along, Nicole?
