The pending impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump is shaping up to be every bit as farcical as his campaign rallies. Nothing betrays this quite like Democrats pleading for public pressure on Republicans to allow witnesses to testify. After all, a trial without witnesses is like a play without actors.
Yet, Republicans are persisting.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to give House impeachment managers and President Donald Trump’s legal team each 24 hours divided over two days for their opening arguments in the Senate’s impeachment trial, a move that indicates Senate Republicans are pushing to finish the trial as quickly as possible — ahead of the President’s February 4 State of the Union address.
(CNN, January 21, 20020)
And so Republicans who accused Democrats of rushing hearings to impeach Trump before Christmas are now themselves rushing the trial to acquit him before … his annual address? A pox on both their houses!
In any case, I won’t be watching Trump’s impeachment trial for the same reason I never watch his campaign rallies. If you’ve never seen the latter, just imagine a pep rally hosted by P.T. Barnum and featuring the demon child of Pinocchio and the Pied-Piper.
