A few days ago, President Clinton and fellow bubba, Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, announced their fat chance crusade to end childhood obesity in America by 2015. But, as Clinton shared empathetic stories about being a junk-food loving chubby kid, it could not have been lost on his rapt audience of teenage junk-food junkies that, despite his childhood diet, Clinton didn’t turn out so bad – looking as he did like the picture of health.
Indeed, true to form, Clinton’s words carry more weight than his deeds can ever match. Because no presidential initiative, no matter how well-intentioned, will stop parents from feeding their kids junk food. And, no matter the pressure to be socially responsible, fast food restaurants will always cater to the fatally super-sized appetites of the American consumer.
Here’s how most Americans will welcome Clinton’s health initiative: By making this new 15-pound burger the next best thing in American dining…
More to the point, however, no one in America needs to be told that eating stacks of pancakes for breakfast, Big Macs for lunch and pizzas for dinner is unhealthy! Just as no one needed a presidential initiative to warn that alcohol and tobacco are poisonous.
So, where’s the beef Mr Clinton? Or is this initiative really just a good-will appetizer for round 2 in your 2 for 1 Rodham/Clinton presidency?
