I am an ardent anti-monarchist. But the purportedly chauvinistic Philip put a public face on feminism long before its modern wave became a movement. I eulogize him for doing so with dignity and inimitable charm.
Indeed, I saw no contradiction in hailing Philip and Elizabeth II on the occasion of their diamond wedding anniversary. I see none in hailing him for the exemplary role he played as consort to one of the most powerful women in the world for 73 years.
Alas, no story about the British royal family would be complete these days without some reference to the narcissistic Meghan and Harry. And, sure enough, trending nearly as much as tributes to Philip are stories about whether or not these Sussexes will return from exile to attend his funeral.
I’m betting Harry will; the fortuitously pregnant Meghan will not. But Harry attending compels one to ponder a funereal analogy for skunk at a garden party.
Farewell, dutiful prince.
