Hailing Colorado’s Coach Prime
Six days ago, everyone was so effusive in their praise for Coach Prime that they seemed like cult worshippers. His Colorado had just defeated Colorado State 43-35 in a thrilling double-overtime game.
But, as my Facebook Notifications will attest, I sounded this sobering note at Yahoo Sports:
Yeah, but all the analysts had Colorado winning by ‘at least 21 points.’ So beware the prime-time hype…
I then added context with this comment at CNN:
Deion Sanders is doing for college football what Lionel Messi is doing for MLS soccer. I just fear Sanders has everyone on a sugar high. Hell, he has raised expectations so high that not winning the national championship might be a ‘failed season.’ But I suspect the crash will come well before that.
Oregon defeats Colorado
Sure enough, prime time met game time. The following from ESPN gives a sense of how things played out:
Deion Sanders and Colorado traveled to face the No. 10 Oregon Ducks. CU was a 21-point underdog at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, and it showed. Ducks quarterback Bo Nix and Oregon scored on their first three possessions and led by 35 at halftime.
And things only got worse for the Colorado Buffaloes in the second half. They ended up losing 42-6.
So, let the venting of schadenfreude (laced with racism) begin. No doubt much of it will riff off the Oregon coach priming his players with this pregame taunt:
They’re fighting for clicks. We’re fighting for wins.
Colorado’s schedule gets even tougher
Them’s (real) fighting words. So, your college lesson today, Coach Prime, is:
- Don’t talk your kids into a fight you haven’t prepared them to win!
Because damn, bruh, letting ducks humiliate them like that, you’re even giving buffaloes a bad name.
With lesson learned: here’s to the next game. I’m rooting for Coach Prime and his Colorado Buffaloes.
But no amount of rooting will help them defeat the teams now lying in wait. Not least because most of those teams are just as good or better than the Oregon Ducks
