Black comedian Chris Rock won the coveted gig to host this year’s Oscars. Therefore, you might wonder why he’s dismissing the telecast as “idiotic” and nothing more than “a fashion show [that] no black straight man” watches.
This no doubt is politically incorrect and rather smacks of biting the hand… But, Rock has a point.
I have never watched the Oscars and it has nothing to do with my race. I just can’t imagine any straight man wasting 3 or 4 hours of prime sports time watching what, in effect, is a fashion show of couture gowns and borrowed jewelry. And, let’s face it, this is the best that show has to offer.
But the fashion show is lost on us because when we see these strutting mannequins, we don’t wonder “is she wearing Versace, Vera Wang, Chopard or Harry Winston?” No, what we see is a little cleavage and some curves and wonder what she looks like when she takes those things off … preferably with an eager assist from us!
(But why wonder when we can google “Naked Celebrities” and watch what we really want to see on our own time.)
Moreover, it really is idiotic to watch a 4-hour show just to see the 5 minutes it takes to present awards for best actors (male and female), best film and (maybe) best director. Who cares about anything else!
At least on the music awards shows – in addition to seeing far more cleavage and curves on the red carpet – one gets to see some live performances (Ashlee Simpson, J Lo and Mark Anthony notwithstanding).
Therefore, I commend Chris Rock for daring to call this spade a spade. He was wrong, however, to voice his disdain in racial terms.
So, ladies and gays, enjoy the show!
