Obama delivers his final address to the UN General Assembly today. Unfortunately, his recitation of achievements during his tenure as leader of the Free World will be undermined by the persistence of too many crises that have defied, even made a mockery of his leadership.
Those crises include the menace of North Korean nukes, the intensification of sectarian conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the de facto world war brewing in Syria, the Muslim and African migration now threatening to blow Europe asunder, to say nothing of Brexit, and the Putinization of Russia and its “near abroad.”
Hell, given the way Iran is menacing U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf and abetting genocide in Syria, even Obama’s signature nuclear deal compels one to wonder whether it was worth the price.
Therefore, I suspect delegates will show even less interest in his address than I might in a pastor’s homily on the virtues of abstinence.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been dismissing the feckless talking shop these UN gatherings have become for nearly a decade – as “World Leaders Blow Hot Air as UN Confab…,” September 26, 2007, attests. Alas, plus ca change….
