I know it’s hard to believe this unromantic aside coming from no less a romantic than William Shakespeare. But the irony is such that it should compel you to heed this PSA:
Do not participate in today’s public orgy of spending masquerading as private expressions of love. Spare yourself the embarrassment, to say nothing of the expense. Instead, join me in boycotting this day. Then make a point of giving and saying all you might’ve today when you suspect the one you love would least expect it.
That said, I pity the narcissistic exhibitionists who think nothing is more romantic than sharing private expressions of love on social media … for all the world to see. For theirs is love which falters when it altercation finds, or unfollows at the first hint of doom.
Sadly, beyond trending, narcissistic exhibitionism (for viral attention) now defines how nearly everyone with a social-media account expresses everything — from love to grief and all emotions/emojis in between.
In other words, no moment is too private or sacred to share on the World Wide Web for “Likes.” Yet these are the same nincompoops who conjure up outrage over tech companies like Facebook exploiting their private data for profits.
