Mother Nature’s fed up with us. Helene made landfall on Thursday night as a Category 4 beast, leaving 42 dead, hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed, and millions without power. But, in case you haven’t noticed, these “once-in-a-century” hurricanes are becoming annual events. Why? Because we refuse to change our ways.
But hurricanes and wildfires are Mother Nature’s futile attempt to get us to change our behavior to combat climate change. It’s like a mother scolding an unruly child, hoping it’ll finally study for that test and stop flunking out. We keep defying the existential warnings at our peril — rebuilding and living as if nothing’s changed.
