Jews, God’s chosen people
Speaker Mike Johnson is a Bible-thumping, scripture-quoting zealot. He thinks God ordained him to be House Speaker. And, like most MAGA Republicans, he wears his evangelical Christianity on his sleeve.
I am the son of an evangelical preacher man. I know evangelicals believe God commanded them to convert and save the Jews, who they believe are God’s chosen people.
Crazy, right? If Jews are God’s chosen people, why would the Almighty need a gaggle of delusional Christians to save them?
Thus, it’s no surprise that Johnson would sooner see Putin’s Russia do to Ukrainians what Hitler’s Germany did to Jews than take a dollar of aid from Israel to save Ukraine.
Republicans performing for God and Trump
You’d think “saving” the Jews alone was mission impossible. But these evangelicals also believe God ordained them to do the bidding of a mammon like Donald Trump. That’s how much Republicans have lost their way.
But, like Trump, congressional Republicans are far more interested in performing than governing. And that’s all Johnson is doing by conditioning support for Israel on taking money from the IRS, which Democrats allocated to catch billionaire tax cheats.
After all, Republicans know full well that their Israel-only bill will be dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate. Because Democrats will add funding for Ukraine, border protection, and hurricane relief to the bill and send it back to the House.
Having completed their performance, Johnson and his band of tartuffes will duly put that “reconciled” bill on the floor. And, trust me, it’ll pass. Then, it’s curtains down and on to The Tragic Folly of Speaker Johnson, Act II.
