I suspect billions of people will watch the Oscars on Sunday to see who will win the best actor and actress awards for their movie roles this past year. And fair enough. Good luck to all nominees.
But I hope you don’t mind this shameless attempt to bask in the reflected glow of the Oscars by announcing the good news that Taswell Papier won the best lawyer in the world award at the
annual Legal Business Awards in London just weeks ago. And this is an especially noteworthy achievement because he was actually the first African ever nominated for this coveted professional award.Papier was recognized for his:
“…tireless efforts to provide access to justice for the poor [and] for incorporating into a major commercial law firm a pro bono office…and raising the profile and helpfulness of access to justice in such a practical way.” He is a partner in the firm of Sonnenberg Hoffmann Galombik (SHG). And as a brother lawyer, I know well that most pro bono offices at major firms are little more than PR gimmicks. Therefore, even though Papier won the award, kudos should also go to his firm for allowing him to put into practice the promise of providing the poor with free access to justice. Indeed, as the best lawyer in world himself said: “We (at SHG) believe that establishing a resource in the heart of the community is crucial in facilitating access to justice.” So here’s to Taswell Papier – a man eminently deserving of global recognition – not for pretending to be someone he’s not, but for being the role model he is.NOTE: Here’s an honorable mention to my pupilage firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert for winning the “Dispute Resolution Team of the Year” award.
