But once in a blue moon, I find a diamond in the rough which refers me to an article that stirs my public consciousness. And such was the case yesterday when Robin S. emailed a link to an article on my favorite Christian crackpot: Pat Robertson!
Like Robin, any regular reader of this weblog knows that the only public figures I detest more than corrupt politicians are hypocritical preachers and false prophets. I find it simply stupefying, indeed troubling, that so many otherwise intelligent people give credence to the utterances of these Tartuffians. And no preacher has prophesied more nonsense in the name of God than Robertson. Yet he continues to attract multitudes of followers from all over the world to his ministry.
For example, last January, Robertson announced – after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke – that God told him He struck down Sharon for daring to give to Palestinians the promised land of the Jews. Then, on Tuesday, as if to compete with “Astrologers to the Stars” to see who can make the most outrageous prediction for the New Year, Robertson announced that God has now told him that:
…evil people will come to America…and a terrorist attack on the United States will result in mass killing, possibly in the millions, late in 2007.
And, just to make sure he got conveyed this message from God correctly, he qualified it by adding that:
The Lord didn’t say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.
Never mind that Robertson’s message from God is about as reliable as my prediction that an earthquake will destroy California this year. However, I feel moved by the Holy Spirit to admonish Christians who support his ministry that they might as well have “Jim Jones cool-aid drinker” tattooed to their foreheads. Because, with Robertson’s patently blasphemous, deceptive, and misleading invocations of messages from God, he is clearly leading them down a similar primrose path….
But, in a vain (Robertson-inspired) attempt to save their souls, I predict that late in 2007, God will do to Robertson what he falsely claims God did to Sharon.
