Half of Donald Trump’s former cabinet secretaries are refusing to endorse his campaign, citing his unfitness for office. Gen. Mark Milley, Trump’s former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, explains why their refusal is as unprecedented as it is disqualifying:
He is the most dangerous person ever. I had suspicions … but now I realize he’s a total fascist. He is now the most dangerous person to this country.
— The Hill, October 11, 2024
Milley’s warning about Trump echoes Gen. Claus von Stauffenberg’s plot to stop Hitler. Milley knows the risk he’s taking, just as Stauffenberg did. After all, Trump has already called him a traitor. And, if Trump wins, Milley is bound to face a court-martial — under penalty of death.
So, maybe he figures he has nothing to lose. By calling Trump “the most dangerous person ever,” Milley is effectively putting a target on his back. And it’s no stretch for the brave soldiers he trained to hear that as a call to arms. Because Milley is saying, in effect, that the fate of American democracy and national security rests in their hands — if the American people are stupid enough to elect this dangerous fascist.
