Jon Gruden stepped down Monday as the coach of the Las Vegas Raiders football team hours after The New York Times detailed emails in which he had made homophobic and misogynistic remarks, following an earlier report of racist statements about a union leader [‘Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin tires,’ Gruden wrote about DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the N.F.L. Players Association].
He denounced the emergence of women as referees, the drafting of a gay player and the tolerance of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem, according to emails reviewed by The Times.

Gruden clearly had to go. So he did the right thing by resigning.
But boy, talk about consciousness of guilt. The N.F.L. Players Association is now demanding release of the entire trove of 650,000 emails that contained Gruden’s. So imagine what damning revelations must lurk therein if the NFL fears an existential crisis if it releases those emails.
But I smell a rat, er, a whistleblower… It’s only a matter of time.
In any event, nothing reflects America’s moral decay quite like a racist football coach being forced to resign for slurring minorities and women in emails, but a racist president being worshipped like a cult leader, despite slurring minorities in public and sexually assaulting women in private.
Not to mention all the high crimes and misdemeanors Trump committed, including an attempted coup, which got him impeached … twice.
Apropos of which, I alienated a few more Republican acquaintances yesterday for pointing out the hypocrisy inherent in them calling for Gruden’s head while still kissing Trump’s feet. I’ve been calling them out like this ever since they made Trump their presidential nominee in 2016.
So, despite my catholic willingness to reason even with the Devil himself, I can count on the fingers of one hand, and still have a few left, the number of Republican acquaintances willing to be reasoned with these days.
Meanwhile, I fear it can only be a matter of time before technology allows people in Gruden’s pickle to credibly claim “deep fake” to dismiss such damning emails.
