The BBC published and interesting article yesterday on Ecotourism in Ecuador which serves as a positive update to a recent article ipinions published on efforts by native Indians of the Amazon Basin to protect and reclaim their lands from crass commercial development.
Welcome to Ecuador: Imagine destroying these natural habitats in the interest of economic development. Thank God for the Indians of the Amazon!
But the BBC article exposes the inherent conflicts that arise when native Indians throughout the Americas try to harmonize their traditional culture with the ever encroaching trends of economic development in their midst. Nevertheless, ecotourism that is managed by the Indians themselves offers the best hope for preserving ancestral lands and natural wonders whilst giving them the means to provide for their sustainable development. And, clearly this is a more salutary approach than selling their lands and souls to casino developers like so many of their Northern brothers have done.
