I’m ready to do this. I want to be treated like everybody else. I want to do the time. I want to do it right.
[So said Paris Hilton just hours before reporting to jail, which prompted me to exclaim, incredulously, “bullshit!” when a video clip of her uttering these patently-disingenuous words was played on the evening news.]
Because all of America, if not the world (given international media coverage of this woman’s jailhouse diaries), was shocked, shocked, yesterday when the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department gave Paris Hilton a “get outta jail free card” – after serving only 4 of her 23-day sentence. And they must feel completely inured to criticisms – offering as they did the “simple” excuse that she was released because her private shrink said the poor thing was on the verge of a nervous breakdown…threatening suicide. What second-rate drama…!
Now she gets to “convalesce” and serve out the rest of her time (now 40 days) under house “arrest” – complete with electronic monitoring ankle bracelet – at her Hollywood mansion. Is there any wonder why this skinny, rich bitch is so spoiled?!
This story merits no further commentary. But I do feel obliged to admonish blacks – who are understandably outraged by this (latest) mockery of the American criminal justice system – to resist incitement by provocateurs like Rev Al Sharpton to turn this into yet another racial slight against us. Because we should hold our political guns cocked and loaded for a more worthy fight….
After all, the special treatment accorded Paris does not even rank as the most egregious case of celebrity (rich-people) justice. More importantly, however, it has nothing to do with her being black or white. Indeed it might help to recall that Halle Berry didn’t even spend one night in jail after driving her SUV through a red light in Hollywood, broadsiding a small car (injuring the driver) and then fleeing the scene. And rapper Snoop Dogg has been arrested umpteen times – and for far more serious offenses than those that landed Paris in jail – yet somehow he always seems to avoid doing time….
At any rate, where Paris is concerned, that’s not all folks: Because political considerations ofter determine criminal justice. And in this case, I would not be at all surprised if political pressure forces the Sheriff to throw Paris back in the pokey where she belongs. So stay tuned….
NOTE: Many Caribbean natives are being made to feel shame and guilt because the idiots who were arrested last week for plotting to blow up JFK Airport are from our region. But click here to read my CNN commentary providing complete absolution from all shame and guilt in this respect.
