My home team, the Washington Nationals, won the NL East Championship last night.
Given the celebrations, though, you’d think we had won the World Series. Of course, the reason for this delirium is that this is the first postseason berth for Washington, DC in 79 years.
But the irony or foreboding was not lost on me that all of this celebration came after actually losing to the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 last night. We clinched despite this loss because the second–place Atlanta Braves lost to the Pittsburg Pirates. TMI?
The point is that notwithstanding all of the champagne it had to have been somewhat sobering for the players to have won by losing.
Moreover, call me old fashioned, but I think they should have kept the champagne on ice until at least the division championship….
Let’s go Nats!
