News junkies are salivating over the titillating prospect of a CNN Anchor – Anderson Cooper – being outed this week by Michael Musto, the gay outing crusader of the Village Voice newspaper. Musto distinguished himself by hounding celebrities like Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres about their closeted lifestyles until they found the “courage” to come out.
Now Musto has Anderson Cooper in his sights. But given that homosexuality is hardly the taboo it used to be, all this attention might help Anderson come from behind in the cable news rating and get a rise straight to the top.
Many closeted gays consider Musto a pariah but his activism is indispensable to our progress as a society. Indeed, if Blacks had proud provocateurs like Musto in the early days of our liberation, perhaps the shameful self-hating practice of blacks passing for whites (closeted blacks) might never have become so prevalent.
