Teslas now look more fascist and futuristic
Two years ago, Jennifer Trebb thought driving a Tesla meant embracing the future. Now, she’s ditching her Model Y. She’s fed up with Elon Musk’s full-throttle dive into MAGA politics — Nazi salute included — and the megalomaniacal way his DOGE gang is reshaping the US government.
She’s not alone. Tesla’s sales have cratered in the US and Europe, with February’s numbers confirming the freefall.
Tesla is going the way of Twitter
Frankly, I’m not surprised Tesla owners have buyers’ remorse. I’m only surprised it took them so long. After all, they should’ve ditched Teslas when they dumped Twitter. That, of course, was right after Musk turned it into a cesspool of racism, antisemitism, and right-wing lunacy.
Yet, many who decry Musk’s politics still bankroll him —by driving their Teslas or using their X accounts. Simply put, liberal hypocrisy is Musk’s lifeline.
Celebrities have lost influence
Celebrities like Elton John made a grand show of quitting Twitter, no doubt thinking millions would follow. But the mass exodus never came. Alas, for most, Twitter’s “hellscape” is still more interesting, addictive, and profitable than the alternatives. Ironically, this is why so many Republicans—and media outlets—can’t quit Trump.
Celebrities like Sheryl Crow are making a grand show of quitting Teslas. Unfortunately, even bigger stars like Beyoncé and Jay-Z are flaunting their Tesla purchases. But I hope plummeting sales means the former is having a bigger impact. If so, maybe — just maybe —this is the wake-up call that finally makes Musk pay for his politics.
