In my March 20 commentary, I warned about lockdowns triggering French-style revolutions. Sure enough, everything from solitary acts of rebellion to organized protests have been breaking out all over the country lately.
But even I did not expect clergymen and politicians, proverbial pillars of the establishment, to be the latter-day Dantons and Robespierres championing revolts against it.
Yet only that explains the truly disturbing image one of my favorite cartoonists, Zapiro, created for the March 24 edition of The Daily Maverick. It features notorious firebrand Bishop Bheki Ngcobo of the South African Zion Christian Church in full-sermon delirium. And it says more than thousands of his sermons could ever say:
Remarkably, it’s debatable who warrants greater condemnation — that false prophet or this pandering president:
President Donald Trump on Friday demanded that governors reopen churches, synagogues and mosques ‘right now,’ threatening to override them if they do not do so by the weekend. …
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, when asked what authority allows Trump to override a governor’s rules, did not provide a specific provision.
(CNBC, May 22, 2020)
Of course, this is the same president who made a show last month of demanding that governors reopen their economies … for Easter. And, when governors ignored him, his threat to override them proved every bit as fake as his infamous tan.
Therefore, this is just the latest example of this wannabe emperor strutting his morbidly obese ass on the world stage without realizing he’s wearing no clothes.
