Given the hero’s welcome he received in Albania yesterday, beleaguered US President George W Bush can be forgiven the wish thought that he was marching triumphantly through the streets of Baghdad. Nevertheless, he must have felt positively Clintonian as these former communists shouted “Bushie, Bushie” as they hailed him for his unilateral determination to shield them from Russia’s Cold-War resurgence.
After all, Bush has made it clear that, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war-mongering resentment, he intends to invite Albania into NATO’s ever-expanding protective vortex….
But the deliriously-cheering crowds (so eager to embrace Bush that their surge towards him must have given the Secret Service nervous jitters) were doubly grateful to behold this American president. Because they also appreciate that he seems no less determined to ensure that their brothers in Kosovo – who comprise over 90% of the population in this (disputed) Serbian province – will soon become as “liberated” from the Serbs as they are now from the Russians.
And in a press conference with their defiantly pro-American Prime Minister, Sali Berisha (who greeted Bush as “the greatest and most distinguished guest we have ever had in all times”), Bush played to his adoring fans by declaring that:
Sooner rather than later you’ve got to say `Enough’s enough — Kosovo is independent.
Hail Bush!!!
