Anabolic steroids have been a topic of considerable public debate lately. But nobody exploited and personified their use more infamously than Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger: from he-man to girlie-man
Schwarzenegger now serves as a public service announcement against steroid use: he flaunted the inflated benefits in his prime, but now displays the deflated effects in his old age.
In short, using steroids is a Faustian bargain. It gives you bulging biceps and gorilla-like strength for a few years. But then it leaves you with a flabby gut and noodle-like virility for the rest of your life.
Why do men strike this Faustian bargain?
Men take steroids for the same reason boys use crack. The temporary high they get is addictive. But pictures of Arnold in his posing trunks today could serve as an effective PSA. They would convey the same warning against using steroids that viral pictures of ex-smoker Terri H convey against smoking.
