Curiously, unlike Americans, the British evidently saw no need to glorify their holidays with patriotic or reverential titles like President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day or Thanksgiving Day. Instead, they just referred to almost all of them as Bank Holidays (no doubt in honor of Britain’s great mercantile heritage).
That’s why the “Whit Monday” holiday seems so puzzling. After all, it has a reverential provenance being, as described in Wikipedia:
The holiday celebrated the day after Pentocost – a movable feast in the Christian calendar, being dependent upon the date of Easter.
Nevertheless, throughout the Caribbean (in countries where it’s observed), Whit Monday has always been regarded as just another excuse to spend a working day at the beach. And, surrounded as we are by the most beatiful beaches in the world, who can blame us!
But I invite you to come join us in The Bahamas. Book now!
And, come join us in the Turks & Caicos Islands. Click here for one reason why you should…Book now!
