Unfortunately, last week’s protests over the publication of caricatures of the prophet Muhammad that took off with appropriate moral indignation have now been hijacked by political fanaticism that only reinforces caricatures of the great religion the Prophet founded.
Therefore, I am encouraged by the belated efforts of Islamic clerics to quell the protests. Especially because I’m so mindful that too many of these clerics have sat in blasphemous silence for years as Muslims kidnapped and beheaded many innocent people (some even sympathetic to their grievances) in the name of Allah.
Caricatures of Prophet Muhammad, Muslims protest
I do not presume to know what motivates so many Muslims to participate in the hateful and violent
demonstrations still erupting all over the world. However, I’m convinced that it is as much an insult to Muhammad for these rabble-rousers to be rioting in his name as it was for European newspapers to publish the caricatures in the first place.
My
record of support for Muslims seeking to hold (Muslim and non-Muslim) leaders accountable for social, economic, political and religious discrimination against Muslims is beyond reproach. But my support does not extend to those who pervert their own religion for a polyglot babel of political purposes – as seems to be the case with the vast majority of Muslims now rummaging, pillaging and killing in the name of Islam.Allahu Akbar…
