Comedian John Lovitz is probably best known for uttering the refrain: I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy. Lovitz immortalized this line during a Saturday Night Live mock presidential debate in which he played the scholarly Governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis. And, the guy he was referring to was fellow comedian Dana Carvey who played the verbally challenged George H. Bush – Dukakis’ Republican opponent in the 1988 presidential election and the father of President George W. Bush.
It was not surprising, therefore, when this Lovitz / Dukakis line was resurrected by supporters of John Kerry to rile and ridicule Bush during last year’s presidential campaign; especially since John Kerry seemed even more professorial than Dukakis and George W even more prone to verbal gaffes than his father. Moreover, the only reason we all giggled at Bush was because we assumed he really was just a dumb cowboy with a Texas drawl and that Kerry was a smart statesman with a cosmopolitan flair.
Bush at Yale: Dumb! 77 GPA and 1 D in 4 years…
Well folks, the joke was on us! But it is now obvious that he did so because he knew that the superficial comparisons between them (that portrayed Bush as an irremediable idiot) hid the fact that Bush was actually smarter than he.
Kerry at Yale: Dumber! 76 GPA and 4 D’s in first year…
Nevertheless, isn’t it reassuring to know that in last year’s controversial presidential election between Bush and Kerry (now a.k.a. dumb & dumber), the smarter (and clearly better looking) guy actually won after all….
