British MP George Galloway, a proud political gadfly, seemed more interested in avenging the fall of Saddam Hussein than defending his own political reputation during his confrontational U.S. Congressional testimony
In a remarkably entertaining display of political histrionics and legal sophistry, British Member of Parliament George Galloway had US Senators scratching their heads yesterday as he presented a defiant defense against their charges that he took bribes from Saddam Hussein to oppose the invasion of Iraq. Galloway was appearing by “invitation” before a Senate tribunal investigating the UN oil-for-food scandal. But no defendant since Slobodan Milosevic seemed to relish his chance to lambaste and, indeed, snooker his prosecutors.
Galloway’s political counter-punches left his chief accuser Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota dazed and confused; and, no doubt thinking to himself: “Damn! I know he’s a liar and a thief, but he sounds so doggone convincing”…
Chastened Senators seemed utterly disarmed by Galloway’s knowledge of the “facts” alleged against him. And, they definitely squirmed as he used those same facts not only to implicate American war profiteers but also to indict the campaign chicanery of his accusers in the U.S. Senate. Indeed, only time will tell how many of them will soon appear in the hot seat that Galloway sat in with such cool and admirable equanimity.
Note: Kofi Annan should be heartened by Galloway’s performance and, perhaps, should even borrow some of the British MP’s lines to defend his criminally comprised leadership of the United Nations….
