It probably reveals something about me that the more popular the NFL becomes, the less it interests me. This of course is especially so if my fair-weather team, the Philadelphia Eagles, fails to make it to the playoffs – as was the case this season.
I couldn’t even be bothered to comment two weeks ago on the conference championships that resulted in the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens making it to New Orleans for tonight’s Super Bowl XLVII.
Frankly, it speaks volumes that there will probably be more interest in the men standing on the sidelines during this game (namely, Jim and John Harbaugh) than in the men playing on the field.
Because, in typical fashion, the media have overhyped the prospect of two brothers facing off as coaches for the first time in NFL history. Talk about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat: the Harbaugh family will be experiencing the ultimate in both later tonight.
Meanwhile, my waning interest is hardly helped by this growing phenomenon:
The prospect of watching a heavily botoxed Madonna perform her old songs held about as much suspense as the prospect of watching the overhyped commercials that had already been “previewed” ad nauseam over the past two weeks.
(“Giants Stomp Patriots to Win Super Bowl XLVI 21-17,” The iPINIONS Journal, February 6, 2012)
Granted, even a lip-synching Beyoncé is far more entertaining than Madonna….
But at some point it’s going to dawn on NFL executives that they risk losing many viewers for their big game if their advertisers continue this trend of sucking all of the suspense out of the commercials, which at one point was becoming even more popular than the game itself.
That said, to be a good sport, I’m pulling for the 49ers to win!
