After reading and writing about so many stress-inducing stories lately, I felt like that stressed-out woman in the 1970s TV commercial who exclaims “Calgon, take me away!” before finding relief in her bathtub.
Therefore, imagine my smile, and the vicarious relief I felt, when I came across this picture yesterday of a giant woman taking a bath in a lake in Hamburg, Germany:
Of course, given her size and blonde locks, I could not help thinking of that 1958 cult razzie Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman, which featured Daryl Hannah in an equally bad 1993 remake.
But I really appreciate the brilliant sculpting by artist Oliver Voss as well as the regard for public art this piece, called “Die Badende” (i.e. “The Bather”), represents.
Apropos of public art, “The Bather” will undoubtedly remind those of us who live in the Washington, DC area of “The Awakening” – the pioneering 1980 sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr (now installed at the National Harbor) of a giant man attempting to free himself like a Zombie from the grave:
Anyway, I feel much better now … and hope you do too.
